Here's some good news for Sony Ericsson Xperia Play owners looking to get more out of their device's camera. According to multiple XDA forum members, the upcoming Android 2.3.4 update for the Play will enable video recording at 720p resolution with continuous auto-focus. The software update in question isn't widely available yet, but the reports have been confirmed by multiple users who are already rocking 2.3.4 on their devices.
Since it launched back in April, the phone's 5-megapixel rear camera has been limited to recording video at 480p or lower, so kudos to SE for going the extra mile to add extra functionality in its software updates. Join us after the jump for a 720p sample video, courtesy of XDA poster Nhialor.

Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft’s wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today’s installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.
We’ve got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed — and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We’re also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio — the game’s actual publisher.
It’s still early, of course, so it’s entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple’s legal eagles at bay.Windows 8 App Store images leaked? originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 10:00:00 EST. I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I’m all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene.
OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).
I’m of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it’s beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?
OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing — in case something like WriteMonkey’s dark background is just too oppressive for you.
After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter’s features and creative soundscapes.Continue reading OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to WindowsOmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 13:00:00 EST. Lather up your vocal cords, Europe, because it looks like Google Voice is on its way over. That’s according to the company’s European Director of Business Development, Jens Redmer, who told The Next Web yesterday that Google is taking “concrete action” to expand the service to the Old World. Redmer later confirmed that he’s currently conducting internal tests with Voice, adding that its voicemail transcription feature has performed particularly well within Europe. He stopped short, however, of offering a precise launch date, saying only that the service’s release would hinge upon legal and regulatory issues, rather than any technical obstacles. Now that the train has rolled into the testing phase, though, it may only be a matter of time before it arrives at the station.Google Voice enters internal testing across Europe, international launch on the horizon? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 21 Sep 2011 04:24:00 EDT.
